Introduction: Expectations and the Eight-Week Journey
When I began EDLD 5302, I expected to learn about instructional technologies and digital tools that could enhance teaching and learning. What I did not anticipate was how deeply the course would challenge my identity as a learner. Rather than focusing solely on tools, this course emphasized mindset, ownership, and the design of meaningful learning experiences. Over the course of eight weeks, I transitioned from viewing technology as a support mechanism to understanding it as a catalyst for innovation and learner agency.
Fink (2013) argues that powerful performers must learn to assess the quality of their own work. This reflection has required me to examine not only what I produced in this course, but how I grew as a self-directed learner. Through the Learning Manifesto, Personality & Leadership Philosophy, Technology Case Study Analysis, and collaborative discussions, I have developed a clearer sense of my role as both a learner and a leader in digital learning environments.
Evaluation of Successes: What Is Working Well?
One of my greatest successes in this course has been fully embracing the COVA learning approach: Choice, Ownership, Voice, and Authentic learning (Harapnuik et al., 2015). Designing and curating my ePortfolio reinforced the importance of learner agency. Rather than completing assignments for a grade, I began creating artifacts that reflect my professional identity and long-term goals.
My Technology Learning Manifesto articulated my belief that technology should empower learners to construct knowledge collaboratively and authentically. Writing this manifesto clarified my commitment to fostering student-centered environments that prioritize creativity and critical thinking over compliance.
In my Personality & Leadership Philosophy, I explored how my strengths align with transformational leadership. I recognized that innovation requires both vision and relational trust. This assignment helped me see that effective educational technology integration depends not only on technical skill but also on influence, empathy, and shared purpose.
The Technology Case Study Analysis allowed me to apply theoretical concepts to a real-world context alongside a fabulous group of my peers. Analyzing implementation challenges reinforced the importance of systems thinking, stakeholder engagement, and sustained professional development. I fully participated in our group collaboration, and successfully connected research to practice, strengthening my ability to evaluate initiatives critically rather than accept them at face value.
Additionally, my Learning Networks Blog expanded my professional learning network (PLN). Engaging with thought leaders and classmates broadened my perspective and modeled the power of connected learning. This experience demonstrated that meaningful professional growth does not occur in isolation.
Areas of Growth: What Can I Improve?
Although I made significant progress, there are areas for improvement. First, I can deepen my critical reflection. At times, I focused more on describing assignments than analyzing their long-term implications. Moving forward, I want to engage in more metacognitive questioning, such as, “How is this shaping my beliefs?” and “ How will this influence my leadership decisions?”
Second, I can contribute more proactively in collaborative discussions. While I participated consistently, I recognize that I could have initiated more dialogue or challenged ideas more constructively. True collaboration involves intellectual risk-taking, an area where I am still growing.
Finally, I need to continue refining my ePortfolio organization. As the foundation of my digital identity, it should clearly communicate my learning philosophy and professional vision. Aligning future artifacts under a coherent “Learning” framework will strengthen both clarity and impact.
Reflection on Collaborative Discussion Group
My collaborative discussion group played a vital role in my learning. Contributing thoughtful responses and engaging in peer feedback sharpened my thinking. I learned that my peers bring diverse professional experiences that enrich problem-solving conversations. Observing their approaches to innovation reinforced my deep appreciation for seeking out multiple perspectives, there is wisdom in a multitude of counselors, afterall.
I also learned that I tend to process ideas internally before sharing them. While reflection is a strength, I want to balance it with more spontaneous contributions. If I could change one aspect of our collaboration, I would incorporate more structured peer feedback cycles to deepen analysis and accountability.
Connecting Growth Mindset, Failing Forward, and COVA
This course reinforced the importance of a growth mindset (Dweck, 2006). Viewing challenges as opportunities rather than threats allowed me to revise, refine, and strengthen my work. The concept of “failing forward” shifted my perception of mistakes from evidence of inadequacy to data for improvement.
COVA learning operationalizes growth mindset by placing responsibility on the learner. When given choice and ownership, I became more invested in quality. My voice mattered because the work was authentic. As I continue in the ADL program, I see these principles shaping how I approach my Innovation Plan and future coursework. I am no longer completing assignments to satisfy requirements; I am building a body of work that reflects my professional mission.
Conclusion
EDLD 5302 has transformed my understanding of educational technology. More importantly, it has transformed my understanding of myself as a learner. Through intentional self-assessment, meaningful collaboration, and authentic creation, I have strengthened my capacity for self-directed learning.
As I move forward in the ADL program, I am committed to sustaining a growth mindset, embracing productive struggle, and designing learning experiences that empower others to take ownership of their growth. In doing so, I aim not only to integrate technology effectively but to cultivate learning environments where students become powerful performers in their own right.

I am a cardiac sonographer and a professor, and I refuse to let those two identities stay separate. I have spent years at the bedside reading hearts, and I bring every one of those moments into my teaching. My students don't just learn technique; they learn to think, to question, and to trust their own clinical judgment. That is not an accident. It is a choice I make every single day. My Innovation Plan is built on a simple conviction: cardiac sonography students deserve more than passive instruction and printed handouts. I am developing a digitally integrated, student-centered learning model that leverages simulation technology, curated digital resources, and reflective practice frameworks to close the gap between the classroom and the clinical environment. Every tool I introduce, every redesigned lesson, every digital touchpoint exists to help students see more clearly, both on the screen and in their own learning. This is not just course redesign; it is a reimagining of what cardiac sonography education can be.

What Is Right—and Wrong—With Education
Education is at its best when it is human-centered, inquiry-driven, and grounded in authentic practice. Yet too often, education becomes rigid, compliance‑driven, and disconnected from real-world application. As Seth Godin argues in Stop Stealing Dreams, we must stop designing schools that reward memorization and conformity and instead
cultivate curiosity, creativity, and agency.
Sir Ken Robinson reminds us that learning flourishes in environments that honor individuality and nurture diverse talents. What is “wrong” with education is not a lack of tools. It is a lack of purposeful design. Technology cannot fix poor pedagogy;
it can only magnify it.
